Jack Davis to Governor Paterson: “What can be done to connect local workers to local work?”

Rochester, NY: Congressional Candidate Jack Davis (D) attended an Economic Security Town Hall Meeting hosted by Governor David Paterson today to ask the Governor about his plans to stimulate the area economy and address the issue of joblessness across Western New York.

“We know that high taxes and high regional energy rates hamper your mission to renew Western New York’s economy, but the solution to all of our problems remains good paying jobs. If we had good paying jobs, taxes would be lower, communities would be safer, and programs like Social Security would be solvent forever.”

“According to the state Education Department, Rochester had a 39 percent high school graduation rate in 2007. There are also reports that over in Orleans County, some 6 million apples went unpicked last year, when growers were paying pickers between 9 and 12 dollars an hour."

“My question is this – what can be done to connect local workers to local work? How can we ensure that everyone has the chance to find dignity through a decent paying job? And what can government do to incentivize solutions that work for both farmers and young people in our region?”

The Town Hall event was hosted by Governor Paterson to discuss the recent economic downturn and its effects across the region.
