WORKING IN A GLOBAL MARKETPLACE
Opening Remarks by Jack Davis,
Debate at SUNY Brockport

"I am on a mission to save American jobs, farms and industries. I invite you all to join me."

HELLO - THANKS FOR COMING.

I am on a mission to save American jobs, farms and industries. I invite you all to join me.

The debate tonight is on working in a global marketplace.

Will the people that believe in globalization and free trade raise their hands?

The non-believers probably came because you are worried about your future. You should be! If you stand at a machine or sit at a desk your job is not safe.

The U.S. trade deficit ballooned to a record 666 billion dollars in 04. This is a 25% increase over the 03 trade deficit.

Each billion dollars of trade deficit represents loss of 9,000 jobs. I have done the math. In round numbers 6 million jobs were lost in 04.

The U.S. working population grows at 150,000 per month. Therefore the U.S. needs to create 150,000 jobs per month or 1.8 million per year. In 4 years this is 7.2 million new jobs required.

During the last 4 years, the U.S. economy had a net loss of 750,000 private sector jobs despite 3 years of so called economic recovery. Fewer Americans are employed in the private sector now, than when "W" was first inaugurated 4+ years ago.

We have over 15,000,000 unemployed and underemployed.

After 30 years of free trade, the total trade deficit is now 3.8 trillion dollars.

The Bush administration contends outsourcing jobs is good for America and the soaring trade deficit reflects a U.S. economy that is growing faster than the rest of the world.

Some will claim here tonight free trade and globalization strengthens the economy and creates jobs.

If that were true:
  • Why is gasoline $2.25 per gallon?
  • Why has the dollar decreased 47% in relation to the Euro and decreased 22% against the Yen?
  • Why do we have a record 7.62 trillion dollar national debt?
  • Why has New York State per capita debt tripled to 2420 dollars in 14 years?
  • Why did Erie County have a 100 million dollar budget deficit requiring it to lay off 1,300 public service employees?
  • Why are Buffalo and Rochester financial basket cases?
  • Why do American consumers have record breaking debts?
  • Why is the U.S. Government borrowing record breaking 2 billion dollars a day from foreigners.
  • Why can't we buy something made in America at Wal-Mart or Home Depot or buy a television, VCR, cell phone or toy made in America?
  • Why will America have an agricultural trade deficit this year for the first time in 50 years?
The answer to all these whys is we have a ruthless form of globalization that is destroying America's jobs, farms and industries.

The multi-national or trans-national corporations have no loyalty to America and have become so financially strong they control the media, the Washington elite and the politicians.

For America to be strong, we must grow, dig, or manufacture the products we consume.

We have become a debtor nation and consumers of foreign products.

The middle class is being destroyed for we are losing our only source of income, JOBS.
